Teens that have a short stature may have a time with the depth of a chair's seat (usually about 22"). I'm pretty short and can relate to 'slouching' in adult-sized chairs (with the seat area being too deep for where the knees bend). I usually have to add cushions or pillows behind me if I'll be sitting for long periods of time in an adult-sized chair--not comfortableat all.

Hard-surface chairs are usually a problem for us short folks, as they don't 'give' like the bean bag chairs above, do. While seated, measure from your teen's back to his or her knees and from knees to feet planted flat to the floor.

Keep this measurement in mind when deciding which chair best suits your teen's stature in height and depth.

Obviously, larger rooms allow more freedom of choice with placement of your furniture pieces. Smaller rooms often require innovative strategy.

While I love my teens I beg to differ: they don't need a big room--not even if they're 6'9" and wear a size 15 shoe. Kidding aside, I'm being dead serious with this room business.

Getting Rid of That Dark Corner in Your Teen's Room

I think every room has one: the dark corner where looming shadows abound. Lounge chairs work well in corners where the walls can support the lounger's backrest. I like to place an uplight (or can light) on the floor, behind the lounge chair. The light creates a cool glow that's perfect for a gloomy corner.

Uplights are really cheap but you can also make one yourself using an old lamp cord and socket from a retired lamp. You can literally use a large vegetable can and feed the wire through it, or just buy a cheap hanging lamp kit. I'll give more lighting ideas below.

A bar cart is a must-have in any entertainer's living room—and can double as functional decor in your entryway, or office (hello, double-height storage!), but it turns out it works just as well as bedroom decor–especially when you don't often use what's on it. Hear me out.

Recently, I bought a bar cart–something I've wanted for awhile now. Being indecisive, it took a good scouring on the internet to nail one down. I wanted something silver, two-tiered, circular, not too big, and with a stemware glass rack. I eventually found one for around $100 from Home Depot that fit the bill.

Apart from not having a ton of living room space to host a bar cart in my shared New York apartment, I felt the bar cart would complement the existing modern decor in my bedroom. So, I strategically placed a few bottles of spirits and champagne (that I'll break into eventually), wine and martini glasses, coasters, and an ice bucket, shaker, and crystal-filled candle. Paired with a neon sign that glows red when lit, the tiny bar area makes my rectangular room feel bigger by offering another section within the space. On one wall, I have my bed and closet. The window-laden, street-facing side hosts my writing desk. The bar cart area maintains itself near the door, TV, and dresser. It's essentially a bedroom, office, and living room packed into a single space. You have to work with what you've got, right?

Lesson learned: No matter the size of the room, a decorative bar cart can still work as an eye-catching piece–especially if you base your alcohol choices on how pretty the bottles are—and in a smaller room, it'll create the sense of a more multi-functional space. You can also ditch the bottles and simply use it to host books, candles, blankets, beauty products, or maybe even fashion it into a coffee bar! In any case, if you want to give your bedroom an unexpected, elevated twist, try a decorative bar cart.

It's not easy to be a country. After checking out the following 13, you might never think of "country-hopping" in quite the same way.

What makes a country?

We tend to use the term "country" loosely, but according to the 1933 Montevideo Convention, to qualify as one, real estate on the world map must meet at least four criteria: It has to encompass a defined area, a permanent population, a government, and a government capable of interacting with other states. That may not sound like a stringent checklist, but it disqualifies a number of places that we generally think of as countries but, technically, aren't.

The countries that are recognized as such globally form a relatively compact club. The United Nations officially recognizes 193 of them as members. Meanwhile, a number of places that we generally file under "countries" while compiling our bucket lists aren't categorized as countries by the United States of America's Department of State. Bermuda

If you vacation on this North Atlantic island, you're vacationing in the United Kingdom—sort of. Unlike independent and sovereign Commonwealth countries like the Bahamas, Barbados, and Jamaica, Bermuda is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom, which controls its foreign affairs, defense, and security. Bermuda Premier David Burt, for one, would like to see that change. In 2018, he told the House of Assembly that it was "unacceptable in a modern democracy" to have "decisions made thousands of miles away that impact our customs, our institutions, and our livelihoods." Bosnia

We usually refer to the beautiful, hilly country to the west of Serbia as, simply, Bosnia, but that name actually applies only to the northern portion of a larger country known as Bosnia and Herzegovina. Elizabeth II is commonly referred to as the "Queen of England," but if that title were accurate, she'd be a monarch without an actual country. Greenland

The world's largest island that is not also a continent (approximately 836,300 square miles) has been a territory of the Kingdom of Denmark since the middle of the last century. Although they live on a different continent (North America) from Denmark and have their own official language (Greenlandic) and monarch (Queen Margrethe II), Greenlanders conducts business using the Danish krone while Denmark sets Greenland's foreign and defense policy. It's an arrangement U.S. President Donald Trump would like to change. "It's just something we've talked about," he said last year of reports that he'd like to buy Greenland outright. "Denmark essentially owns it. We're very good allies with Denmark. We've protected Denmark like we protect large portions of the world, so the concept came up." The idea didn't fly with Mette Frederiksen, Denmark's prime minister, who was quoted as saying, "Greenland is not for sale."

Korea

The U.S. Department of State recognized the entire East Asian peninsula of Korea as a country from 1882 to 1905, but since 1948, Korea technically has been not a country, but a region with two sovereign states: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) led by Kim Jong-un and the Republic of Korea (South Korea) led by President Moon Jae-in. Not surprisingly given the decades of turmoil since the Korean War in the early 1950s, they aren't particularly friendly neighbors. Their relationship, as Jean Lee, North Korean expert with the Wilson Center, told NPR last year, still "ebbs and flows." These 15 countries existed 100 years ago, but they don't anymore.

Northern Ireland

When we talk about the country of Ireland, we're generally talking about the entire island to the west of Great Britain, but the northeastern portion of the island is not part of the Republic of Ireland. Officially known as Northern Ireland, it's one of the four non-sovereign nations comprising the United Kingdom, and therefore its citizens, unliked those in the non-Commonwealth Republic of Ireland, all hail the Queen. But Brexit seems to be changing public opinion. In 2013, a BBC poll found that only 13 percent of people in Northern Ireland were in favor of reunification with the Republic of Ireland. Last year, according to a poll cited by theAtlantic, that number had risen to 51 percent.

Palestine

While the State of Palestine is recognized as a non-member observer state by a majority of the United Nations' 193 constituent countries, the United States is among the minority holdouts. Palestine isn't listed on the Department of State's official list of countries, and in 2018, U.S. President Donald Trump moved the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem after officially recognizing it as the capital of Israel. Scotland

It's the birthplace of singers Annie Lennox and Sheena Easton and actor Gerard Butler, and it has its own sometimes hard-to-decipher accent, but the land associated with kilts and bagpipes is not actually an independent country. Although it was, for centuries, a sovereign state with separate monarchs (including Mary, Queen of Scots, who ruled from 1542 to 1567), Scotland, like England, is now part of the country known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Here is where things get a little confusing. St. Martin is an island in the Caribbean with a French side (Saint Martin) and a Dutch side (Sint Maarten). However, neither region constitutes an actual country. The northern French side is a territory of France, while the southern Dutch side belongs to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, along with the Caribbean islands of Aruba and Curaçao. It's the only place in the world where France and the Netherlands are neighbors, and Saint Martin is the closest part of France to the United States. Taiwan

If something is "Made in Taiwan," it's technically made in China—at least by U.N. and U.S. standards… for now. Taiwanese citizens can travel the world with Taiwanese passports and they think of themselves as belonging to a separate country, but China continues to dispute Taiwan's sovereign status, and most of the U.N.'s member countries back it up. According to a 2019 BBC News article, "China sees Taiwan as a breakaway province that will eventually be part of the country again, but many Taiwanese want a separate nation." No countries in the world start with these two letters.

Tasmania

Blame it on the Tasmanian Devil, the Looney Tunes cartoon character that established Tasmania as a land down under with its own identity, at least among young kids. In reality, Tasmania is one of Australia's six states, located about 150 miles from the mainland. It's sort of like Hawaii, only a much shorter flight away from its parent country. Although there's been theoretical talk of secession, last year then-Premier Will Hodgman shut it down. "I think it's important to remain part of the federation, he said. "My government has no plan to secede."

Transnistria

If you're on a road trip from Moldova to Ukraine in Eastern Europe, and you decide to check out this small strip of land en route, be prepared for some pretty rigid customs checkpoints. Numerous statues of Vladimir Lenon and a strong militaristic vibe betray its Soviet past. Despite the intensity of the passport controls (likely intended to deter—or profit from—the smuggling that has dominated the area for decades) and the fact that it has its own currency and capital city (Tiraspol), Transnistria isn't an actual country. The region broke away from Moldova in 1990, and although it's still internationally recognized as part of that country, Transnistria's heart faces east, toward Russia.

Wales

The birthplace of Tom Jones and Catherine Zeta-Jones is not, as many assume, an actual country but one-fourth of the British Isles's quartet of non-sovereign nations that make up the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. While the subject of Scottish independence from the United Kingdom appears to be recurrent, Wales seems less likely to attempt brokering a split. Last year, a YouGov poll found that just 28 percent of the Welsh population favor separation. "Scotland was a country whose natural resources had been exploited by a government in Westminster," the Atlantic's Helen Lewis wrote last year. "Most Welsh jobs, meanwhile, lie within 30 miles of England, and Wales's economy appears more reliant on its bigger neighbor." If you have a cottage or Victorian house, it makes sense to embrace its history - a good chintz fabric or brass bed will look instantly at home. Traditional bedrooms are cosy and snug, places to curl up with a good book. Lighting is important too - if you are going for the country look steer clear of bright white lightbulbs and opt for a yellow-toned glow. Pick up some inexpensive brown furniture from your local auction house, invest in some beautiful wallpaper and dot your room with characterful accessories and you're good to go...

  In the main bedroom of Ed and Polly Nicholson's Wiltshire home, an eighteenth-century lacquered chest, which provides a contrasting tone, stands between windows with curtains in 'Secret Garden' by Raoul Textiles.

  'I wanted the house to be comfortable above all, and for me colour is very much part of that,' says Jacquie Rufus-Isaacs of her eighteenth-century farmhouse in the Cotswolds. With the help of her friend, decorator Scott Maddux, she has enhanced the house with a slightly unusual palette, which is no surprise as Jacquie's real love is painting. She has a studio in a converted farm building where she works on her vibrant, expressive still lifes. Furnishings are equally various and include a sofa is upholstered in a Lelièvre stripe in the main bedroom, inherited antiques, junk-shop finds and a selection of paintings. These range from eighteenth-century landscapes to works by living artists including Barbara Stuart and Ken Howard. Jacquie's eye ensures a harmonious composition.

  Dark blue accents, including curtains in inky velvet from The Cloth Shop add depth to the pale scheme in the main bedroom of a Cotswolds house by Joanna Plant. 'Silvergate' wallpaper by Farrow & Ball has an airy elegance that is anchored by a weathered antique mirror and wooden chest of drawers from Maison Artefact, and an artisan-made textured wool Moroccan Berber rug from The Rug Company.

  House & Garden decoration editor Gabby Deeming has created a relaxed summer-holiday feel with a Mediterranean-inspired selection of wood and antique metal furniture. The oiled-oak 'Clyde' side table, is £550 from Pinch, while on the floor, the blue striped cotton dhurrie rug is from a selection at Guinevere antiques.

  The bed frame is antique, but for similar try the 'Somerset' at Laura Ashley. A French, nineteenth-century ash chest of drawers from Colefax and Fowler Antiques complements the iron and glass chandelier. For similar try the 'Chantal' at Graham & Green.   This is a house to fall in love with, located in a Cotswold village so unfeasibly pretty you want to bottle it to savour. In the bedroom you can almost do just that - it opens to the garden. The owners decorated it themselves but Nina Campbell is an old friend and 'still have many things she found'. Here, they matched the bedcover from The White Company to the beams, given a greyish, limed-effect finish to retain a sense of airiness.

  Cream Bedroom with Patchwork Headboard

  The bedroom of decorator Emma Burns of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler is quintessentially English in both its gentle antique style and its 'make do and mend' execution. 'The bedhead is covered in an ancient patchwork made from my mother's old dresses. I originally used it as a tablecloth,' she says. 'For me the bedroom is as important as the sitting room; it is a place of refuge that I use for resting and reading. I like to fill it with books, pictures and armchairs. I've kept a feeling of softness by using a very subtle stippling effect on the walls, and some translucent blinds from Chelsea Textiles under the curtains, which allow a diffuse light into the room. My linen is from Volga Linen.

  The rich, witty and wonderfully eclectic interiors of designer Nicky Haslam's sixteenth-century, gothic-revival hunting lodge have long been coveted by all of us here at House & Garden. So when we heard he was producing a furniture range for Oka, based on pieces from his own home, we were extremely excited. Following his motto 'use something red and gothic in each room and you're all right,' the collection has ogees, points, tracery and quatrefoils a-plenty, offering the chance to recreate at least a part of his look. House & Garden shot the collection in situ at the house. Here in the bedroom 'The Original Orangery Stepped' bedside table, works beautifully with the vertical floral border on the wall (a lovely decorative idea for older houses) and antique chintz bed canopy.

  This Oxfordshire cottage is a charming mix of old and new. Emma Burns of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler worked with the existing features of each room to breathe new life into them. The bedroom's orange velvet curtains (out of shot) were an original fixture, though Emma had them remade and hung from an antique pole to match the quilt (which she sourced from Colefax and Fowler Antiques).   The best thing about having a small or strangely shaped room is the opportunity it presents to use your space imaginatively. The alcove behind the door, in the home of designer Patrick Williams of Berdoulat design, has been turned in to a charming sleeping nook.   Antique Iron Bedstead

  New England chic pervades the upstairs of restaurant owner Keith McNally's Notting Hill house. Reclaimed floorboards are in the main bedroom, along with an antique iron hospital-style bedstead. Navajo blankets in rich shades of red are draped over the sofas and beds throughout the house. The effect is stylish and relaxed. If you are on the lookout for something similar, Sacha Knight's new venture, Knight Mills, does a similar look. Influenced by American Indian designs, her handwoven cotton rugs measure 180 x 120cm and cost £390.

The top of a barn conversion, on the other hand, can be a fabulously spacious main bedroom removed from the hubbub of daily life. Light colours and scrubbed or limewashed beams keep them bright. The main bedroom of Jo Vestey's Oxfordshire farmhouse has Jo's photographs ondisplay and a Japanese light on the desk.   Richard Taylor and Rick Englert have built a Jacobean-style manor at Whithurst Park in Sussex. It took a year to get planning permission and two more to build. The result bears some of the signatures of the prodigy houses built in the era, such as Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire and Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. This spare bedroom on the second floor has a four-poster canopy bed and moulded fireplace in keeping with the manor's Jacobean look.

• In a bedroom at Cadland House in Hampshire, twin beds have block-printed quilts from India with deep yellows and blues pairing for a tasteful pop of colour. Yellow stripes are the backdrop to a gallery wall of artwork which also adds colour to the brown furnished room.

  The late Lady Hindlip, the designer owner of this home, was described as a 'serial mover'. This Fifties property - her nineteenth home - was enthusiastically created into the perfect London pied-à-terre with a quintessentially English feel. The rug in the main bedroom of this is from Talisman. Botanical prints hang on the wall, which is covered with a striped wallpaper by Colefax and Fowler.
